Kaikoura – zasnežené hory a pod nimi more.

Vietor, dážď, slnko a opäť dážď

Zobudíte sa do idylického rána.

My, veľkí bojovníci proti konzumu, sme v zúfalstve vzali naše deti do „mekaču“…

Divoký, nevyspytateľný a slobodný

“New Zealand is an outdoor country, unlike Fiji or Tonga,” always repeated my cousin who also spent three months on the islands three years ago. He studied through the Student Agency, with our common friend Pepo, and then he wwoofed for the last month. We had all important information from the first hand. Also the most important one – New Zealand is about wild beauty, not about golden cutesy beaches. It is hard to believe on the other side of the globe, but people, it’s really true!

Kaikoura – snow covered mountains and sea under them.

 Equipment like for Tatras

My biggest dilemma before the trip was what to pack for all of us for a beautiful island in the middle of an ocean. Short sleeves, skirts, summer hats for the boys etc. I was again woken up from my false assumption by my cousin Peťo – “Be prepared like for Tatras.” I threw out all suitcases, and packed long sleeves, trekking pants and got prepared for the worst. All mums, you can imagine what it means to pack everything for the whole family with two little children for three months, for both good and bad weather! But I am so happy I listened to my friends who have experienced this wild clean country. We have been here already one month but every day there is a new surprise.

Wind, rain, sun and rain again

You wake up to an idyllic morning. Sun is nicely shining. You have great plans about a tour in beautiful countryside. But before you come to the kitchen to prepare breakfast, it is raining. Until you finish your breakfast, sun is shining again, but together with the brother wind. Our Tatra weather is nothing against weather in New Zealand. For example, snow fell in the mountains during our Christmas in Kaikoura. From the terrace of the house we had a great view of snow covered mountains and the sea under them. Of course, we were not sitting on the terrace. It was about 16 degrees of Celsius. On the next day, we were swimming in the sea, it was beautiful 30 degrees; but it was raining and the thermometer showed 17°C in the afternoon. These temperature extremes will kill me! They say that Maori women were the best weavers in the Pacific in the past. They had no other chance in this unstable and cold weather than to weave and weave warm clothes.

Tour at Kaikora seaside where we had troubles with weather. We repeat it again and again – thanks to Exisport for the trekking apparel. We are wearing clothes with water column 5000 daily.

What is the reason?

New Zealand consists of two main islands in the southern part of the Pacific. Not protected by anything, isolated and very unstable in temperature. Very quickly I had to change the idea that we would swim in the ocean at Christmas. I hoped I would fulfil my six years old dream and I would swim in a sea on Christmas Eve. (Finally I managed it on Christmas Day. The result was I got cold and had to stay in bed for two days.L) Our first exotic Christmas was in African Morocco where we had a journalist trip as well. But same like here, also the ocean there, the Atlantic, was too cold. So you won’t find any sunbathing or swimming tourists on the beaches. We haven’t seen yet any restaurant terraces, cafes full of tourists or busy boulevards.

Uncensored nature life. A seal cub is sleeping next to another seal’s skeleton. Maybe his mother?

Created for hitchhikers, campers, free souls

We have travelled about 15,000 kilometres in both islands. We have been here more than a month and we have met only three travelling families with little children like us. New Zealand is a paradise for students, young people without obligations, hunger to explore wild nature, willing to sleep even under open sky, or to hitchhike. Another group of travellers we meet here are older people. For example, we have ran into German pensioners almost in each town. Thus, the tourism industry is focused on these two target groups, from accommodation to various attractions. Therefore it is more difficult to find accommodation for us, because they offer mostly double rooms where you cannot accommodate a family. Also to find a restaurant with a children’s corner is almost impossible. This is the reason why our children have visited McDonald’s for the first time in their life just here! We, warriors against consumerism, have taken our children to the “Mac” in despair…

Wild, unpredictable and free

New Zealand is not really the ideal destination for young families. However what is not ideal, that is made for fantasy. Our life here is often about improvisation, about looking for various creative solutions. It is maybe easier to be at home, in comfort, in warm, to be able to have hot shower anytime, to know what is expected in the morning. But people, let’s admit, isn’t that boring? I know, everybody has own ideas about the life. Our idea is to live life to the fullest. To enjoy night with stars above us, to experience bathing in mountain lakes, to try kayaking in the sea, and to enjoy looking at happy children running around beautiful meadows… and much more. And that all satisfies one of the most important needs of the whole mankind for which are people willing to take guns and fight for it – FREEDOM.
