To najvzácnejšie býva vždy pod nosom

Poznáte to.

Ekokomunitu tvoria tri rodiny s piatimi maličkými deťmi, Jill s manželom a dvaja jednotlivci.

Pomoc a podpora – presne to hľadala Jill, keď začala snívať svoj sen o komunite.

My sa zas zastavíme v ich vinohrade a radi pomôžeme.

To najvzácnejšie býva vždy pod nosom

Naši susedia nám spravil krásne privítanie – slovenské vlajky na dome, transparent, šampanské, chlieb, soľ, klobáska, syr a VIANOCE!

No ak mám ísť s pravdou von. Jednoducho len preto.:-)

You know it.Sometimes you may travel around the whole world but then you will find the most precious at home, under your very nose. Our two last weeks in the eco-community near Auckland were just about that.About the real values that have to be “built” in New Zealand while, thanks God, we still have them in Slovakia, although they unfortunately belong to old fashion.

To najvzácnejšie býva vždy pod nosom

Thirty years old dream

We found and arranged the eco-community Turanga still from Slovakia, five months in advance. We were very interested how the community life in NZ looks like.Communities of people with same interests are very successful in the islands and they are spread all around the country.Turanga farm was established as a thirty years old dream of its founder Jill who desired to live among good people. As a young mother of little kids, she was dreaming about support of a community that would be a healthy and safe place for growing her children. That time she had no idea that not her children but her granddaughter would grow there. This sixty years old woman is a great example that dreams should be fulfilled regardless the age.She has built Turanga farm, where first houses of the organic village will be built in the spring, together with her husband.Years of hard work, hundreds of planted trees, an original New Zealand forest – a bush planted, an infrastructure for an organic village with 18 houses… lakes, animals etc.We gaped it astonished. The long hard way that Jill has never given up.“In 96, we started to look for a land. Finally we found this one where we have built Turanga farm. When my husband spotted it, he immediately imagined how he would plant a forest, how I would establish an organic village. But everything needed time and needed to grow, like our children,” explained Jill (you may find the complete interview on the blog on the next Sunday).

Before the interview, I interrupted this 68 years old woman from mowing blackberries with a big brushcutter

No guns?

The organic community consists of three families with five little children, Jill with her husband and two individuals. They hope that their community will expand soon.It is not so simple to join. For example, the applicant has to agree with a whole set of rules and values recognised by the members.During our stay at Turanga farm, we had opportunity to participate at one of their meetings about community issues. The members were discussing two rules – whether it is allowed to burn anything at the farm, what and under what conditions, and whether guns would be allowed in the organic village.Maybe seemingly trivial problem of burning of “waste” was discussed in several meetings and only the last one led to an agreement. Why?Because burning of various, sometimes also natural materials emit harmful materials to atmosphere.Almost nobody would wave this aside in Zealand. And it is not common to say that it would disperse in the air.On the contrary – me and my family will not endanger our health!

When looking at this picture, please take a deep breath and imagine fresh sea air J

My opinion about the second rule they wanted to implement to a special book of rules of the organic village was completely clear – no guns, what do you want to discuss? After all, we are in the third safest country in the world. Some people don’t even lock here?!The reaction was that opinions in the community are not univocal at all.Two members come from the USA and the question of carrying a gun is very important for them. Finally they did not manage to discuss this point.Anyway, the discussion and the seriousness of their attitude to building not only of the village, but mainly of the community and mutual relations were very interesting. We learned how much work it is to build the infrastructure for the village, but also how much work it is to build the community where everybody understands and helps each other.

The youngest member of Turanga farm is only few days old.

To be together again

Help and support – this is what Jill was looking for when she started to dream about the community. She missed those in her family therefore she decided to build something like a step-family, a community of people of various ages, personalities and interests. The basic idea was to find people who want to live healthily and want to share not only joy but also troubles. To take care of gardens and kettle together, but also to enjoy fruits of the work together. To enjoy the community, not to experience seclusion, to exchange experience and to have support in various life situations…Her dream is to live together in the positive word meaning. When she was describing this to me, I learned that we still have that in Slovakia – “family coexistence”.In Zealand, children leave parents’ houses, base own families in own houses, often far away from their relatives. They are alone for everything. This trend is coming to Slovakia now.

To najvzácnejšie býva vždy pod nosom

Zealanders move from one place to another and the idea of staying in one place for whole generations like it used to be in Slovakia is strange for them.

Fortunately, the value of a family is very strong in our country and even if somebody goes to live to another part of the country, they usually spend holidays with the family, they phone to relatives, they are interested in their lives. It’s a bit different in Zealand, maybe less intense. When I and Janči were listening to Jill, we looked at each other and smiled – what we went to find in another end of the world is in fact under our very nose.A community with amazing people of various ages who have accepted us as own children, their children like new siblings and our children like granddaughters.Who composes our “community”?Our neighbours. Two families where our boys feel like at home. They sleep there, stay for lunch, play with them and they run to them through the gate in the garden when they hear them in the yard J.In the morning I hear my neighbour in the garden – she shouts that I have a coffee at her table. Then we stop by in their vineyard to help them gladly.

To najvzácnejšie býva vždy pod nosom

Our neighbours have prepared beautiful welcome – Slovak flags on the house, a banner, champagne, bread, salt, sausage, cheese and CHRISTMAS!

Right under our very nose!

At Turanga farm we realised the value of our step-family. It’s great to have people around you, people with whom you can laugh, people you can rely on and who frankly care about you. I know it’s a cliché, but happiness is happiness only if you have somebody to share it with – the more people the bigger happiness J.

In Turanga farm we have found also another forgotten value. We lived in the middle of a beautiful valley, surrounded by forests, where we had a detached house only for ourselves. In the morning we were woken up by sounds from the forest and sun rays, view to green mountains. Gorgeous! The feeling of happiness that completely floods your heart. The feeling we were intensely experiencing in our first house in the seclusion near a forest. Our three years there were significantly calmer and more harmonic. Definitely also thanks to our everyday stroll in the forest and a moment for ourselves. Our days in Zealand were about beautiful moments in the countryside. The feeling about contented New Zealanders becomes meaningful because this nation does not know “slippers culture” in front of a TV set. People do not watch TV, but they go to walk to a beach, to a forest, to a brook, simply outside, to breathe fresh air, to have the head cleaned and to pump some energy. Beautiful nature is also in Slovakia. We are just not used to relax by a stroll in the forest, meadow, park, but usually we sit to TV tired from the work. Also this is a way of relax but it is questionable what will recharge you better? Therefore we have decided to restore our tradition of frequent strolls in the countryside. It is one of solutions how to find peace and balance in our life.

We work together again. With Janči, we were freeing young trees from high grass and Jakub was mulching J

New love

Our family has always had intense relation to the nature. But what has fully aroused thanks to Zealand is love to soil.I have never hid that I am a person from a town, a child from a block. After short three months on organic farms, I still don’t feel like a farmer, experienced producer or breeder. Not at all!But I can say I have found something very precious there – the joy of caring of plants and animals. At Turanga farm, I was in charge taking care of hundreds young trees.Weeding around them, mulching them, watering them.Every day I was looking forward to a new tree that will get better thanks to my care.I was surprised how much I had enjoyed it.Maybe also thanks to the live result of my work in front of me.At the same time, it was a new motivation to learn more about farming.

To najvzácnejšie býva vždy pod nosom

Our volunteering in Slovakia will be about sharing all experiences from the farming, about possible different view of life, family and nature, and all that also thanks to these two little farmers.

We do not keep our new experiences only for ourselves. We are preparing continuation of the LifeReset in Slovakia. Our solution how to get more time for the family, how to decrease costs, live healthy and happily will be shared in our blog. This will be continuation of volunteering, now in Slovakia.Maybe strange for somebody why we do everything for free and there are various funny conspirations. But if I should tell true, the most important reason is that we feel good about it, in the same way like we felt good during volunteering for the German organisation. That is so simple.
